ON Roundtable: Strategic Thinking vs. Execution
As per Ops Stories tradition, every now and then, we put our heads together to dive into an operational topic presented to us by one of our community members.
The format is simple and informal - the host presents the topic and shares a couple of questions, we split into small groups (3-5 people), and then we discuss. At the end of the session, we bring our learnings together so we can share them with the wider community.
This time, the topic is brought and conversation facilitated by Penny Penati, Head of Operations at Helm. We’ll be talking about Strategic thinking vs. Execution in ops roles.
As operations leaders, many of us have a natural tendency to be highly executional and tactical, but sometimes our roles also require strategic thinking. In other words, we're good at solving problems and reacting, but how do we find ways to grow our strategic thinking skills and become more proactive?
🤔 Some questions we’ll be tackling:
How do we balance the need to be both executional and strategic when our role is all-encompassing?
What frameworks and/or habits can help us with strategic thinking?
Who holds us accountable for making sure we're able to switch between the two at the right times? How do they do that?
What are the consequences of always executing and not thinking strategically?
How do we make sure that our strategic efforts are recognised and visible?
