About Event

The Human Library is an international non-profit that serves to facilitate courageous conversations.

This event is a free public dialogue experience designed to foster cross-cultural understanding, empathy, and civic connection through facilitated conversation. The event is collaboratively produced by two nonprofit organizations (Superbloom Collective and The Human Library), with significant in-kind volunteer contribution from facilitators, organizers, and community partners, including Kultur Mercado and Cross Cultural Expressions.

SCHEDULE:

  • 6:30-7:00p - Check-in

  • 7:00-8:30p - Human Library Experience

  • 8:30-9:00p - Talkback, Tea, & Mingle

How it works:

We use the universal concept of a “LIBRARY” to create a safe space where attendees can follow their curiosity and learn about other human beings through dialogue.

These spaces can be anywhere where conversations can easily take place.
They are oftentimes in libraries, classrooms, ballrooms, convention halls, gardens, parks and cafes.

A “Human Library” works like a regular library, but with human “librarians,” “books” and “readers.”

  • “BOOKS” are our vetted and trained volunteers who answer questions about their lived experiences of diversity, identity, hardship or marginalization.

  • Examples: Anorexic, Transgender, Autism, Formerly Incarcerated, Obese, etc.

  • “READERS” are our participants. They ask questions based on their own personal curiosity. Readers can ask any question they want of our Books, as long as they’re respectful and treat the Book and their fellow Readers with dignity, respect and kindness.

  • “READINGS” are the conversations that take place between our Books and Readers.
They typically last 30 minutes and there are usually 2-3 readings per event..

  • LIBRARIANS are our facilitators. They guide the event and ensure safety and order for all involved.

“The Human Library is not about changing anyone's mind. We aim to facilitate greater understanding through dialogue. Our Books are trained to not convert, evangelize, lecture, shame or debate.
