Social Studies: Barbie vs. Athena: 3,000 Years of Trying to Figure Out Womanhood
βπ Date: May 6
ββ° Time: 6:30 PM β 8:30 PM
βπ Location: Barnett's Patio
βπ Lecture: Barbie vs. Athena: 3,000 Years of Trying to Figure Out Womanhood
βπ€ Speaker: Dr. Lenore Wright β Baylor University
βWho are you, really? And how much of that "self" was handed to you by history and pop culture?
βDr. Lenore Wright has spent her career investigating the philosophy of personhood and how we represent ourselves to the world. A Baylor Master Teacher and author of Athena to Barbie, Dr. Wright specializes in aesthetics and the search for self-identity.
βIn this lecture, sheβll bridge the gap between ancient archetypes and modern icons. Weβll dive into two angles: how the "Athena" archetypes of the past still dictate our standards today, and what the "Barbie" phenomenon reveals about our modern search for self.
βFrom classical art to the plastic world of cinema, Dr. Wright will help us decode how cultural representations of women (and humans in general) shape our own self-understanding. Whether youβre a philosophy buff or just curious about the icons that fill our feeds, youβll walk away with a whole new way of looking at the worldβand yourself.
