About Event

Join the Jackson Square Ventures Book Club for an evening with Marc Randolph, co-founder and first CEO of Netflix, and author of That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea.

In the tradition of Shoe Dog, Randolph’s “captivating” (Forbes) and “inspiring” (TechCrunch) memoir reveals how one of the most iconic companies of the 21st century began as a half-baked idea tossed around on morning commutes and grew into a global force that redefined entertainment. From pitching his own mother as an early investor to the now-infamous meeting where Netflix offered itself to Blockbuster for acquisition, Randolph shares the scrappy origins, near-deaths, and bold risks that shaped Netflix’s improbable rise.

The conversation will be moderated by Greg Gretsch, Co-founder and Managing Director of Jackson Square Ventures.

Evening Schedule:

5:30pm – Social hour with cocktails and hors d’oeuvre
6:30pm – Fireside chat with Marc Randolph and Greg Gretsch
7:30pm – Audience Q&A and book signing (time permitting)

About the Book:

“A charming first-person account of entrepreneurship in action.” —The Wall Street Journal

That Will Never Work takes readers inside the formative years of Netflix, chronicling how grit, creativity, and relentless optimism can turn even the most unlikely ideas into transformative companies. Equal parts startup playbook and deeply human story, it explores the realities of building something from nothing—what it takes to start, to stumble, to adapt, and ultimately, to succeed.
