What Makes a Great Prime Minister?

Breakfast with Sir Anthony Seldon, hosted by The Hanwell Group

What does it actually take to lead a country - and what separates the prime ministers we remember from the ones history would rather forget?

Join us for a conversation with Sir Anthony Seldon, one of Britain's foremost political historians, honorary historical adviser to 10 Downing Street, and the biographer of every prime minister from John Major to Rishi Sunak. Across more than two decades chronicling life inside No. 10 - most recently in his study of the Sunak premiership - Seldon has built a rare, close-up understanding of the judgement, temperament, timing and sheer luck that make or break a leader.

As the parties gather in Liverpool and Birmingham for conference season, the question of leadership has rarely felt more live. Drawing on his landmark work on the Brexit years and the governments that have wrestled with their aftermath, Seldon will reflect on what truly defines great leadership, the verdicts history is beginning to reach on our most recent prime ministers, and what it all signals for the political battles ahead.

Expect a candid, wide-ranging discussion - and the chance to put your own questions to one of the sharpest observers of British power.
