🇺🇸 We Deport Veterans? Latinos, Citizenship, and the Politics of Immigration Enforcement

Our nation reveres its armed forces—but for many Latino veterans, service has not guaranteed safety or citizenship. Since the Vietnam War and, more recently, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, non-citizen veterans have been subject to deportation, even after risking their lives for the United States. Many were recruited after September 11, 2001, with the promise of an expedited path to citizenship—promises that, for some, went unfulfilled.

Join Dr. Durazo, Politics professor at the University of San Francisco, for a critical exploration of this hidden aspect of military service. He examines why the U.S. recruits non-citizens only to later deport them, who is affected, and what this reveals about race, citizenship, and the politics of immigration enforcement. This lecture draws from his upcoming book The Few, The Proud, The Deported, which unpacks the complex intersections of military service, race, and the law. 🪖
