About Event

Getting into a PhD program means convincing someone that you've identified a problem worth solving and that you're the right person to solve it.

Most applicants read widely but struggle to articulate exactly where their question fits, why it matters now, and what makes their angle distinct. The proposals that land are the ones that show a real understanding of the conversation already happening in a field.

In this talk, Sanya Jain, a cognitive science researcher and graduate admissions mentor, walks through how to find that position, how to communicate it in your proposal, cover letters, and interviews, and how to use the right tools to map a field quickly when you're under time pressure.

The same workflow applies whether you're applying to a PhD program, writing a research proposal for funding, or trying to define your research question at the start of a new project. If you've ever struggled to articulate why your work matters or where it fits in the existing literature, this session is for you.

There'll be time for Q&A at the end, so bring your questions.
