Helping Without Taking Over: How to Preserve Someone's Independence When They Need More Support
Supporting an older adult often comes from a place of love. But even with the best intentions, it's easy for helping to slowly become taking over.
As needs change, families are often faced with difficult questions. When is extra support needed? How do you talk about moving without making someone feel like the decision has already been made? And how do you preserve a person's independence, dignity, and sense of control throughout the process?
Join us for an honest and practical conversation with David Richardson, Owner of ONESource Moving Solutions Toronto, as we explore how families can support older adults through one of life's biggest transitions while keeping the individual at the centre of every decision.
Drawing on years of experience working with seniors and their families, David will share practical advice for navigating conversations about support, downsizing, and moving with empathy, respect, and confidence.
✨ In this webinar, we'll cover:
• Why accepting the right support can help preserve independence rather than diminish it
• How helping can unintentionally become taking over, and how to avoid it
• The everyday challenges that can gradually make living independently more difficult
• Supporting the person, not just completing the task
• How to recognize when a home no longer supports the life someone wants to live
• Starting conversations about additional support or moving before a crisis occurs
• Why belongings often become the hardest part of downsizing and how to approach these decisions with compassion
• Practical ways to help a new home feel familiar, comfortable, and truly like home from day one
Whether you're supporting a parent, spouse, family member, or friend, or simply planning ahead for the future, this webinar will provide practical guidance and thoughtful perspectives to help you navigate these transitions with greater confidence and compassion.

David Richardson is the Owner of ONESource Moving Solutions Toronto, where he helps seniors and their families navigate downsizing, relocation, and transitions into retirement living.
His connection to senior living began as a high school volunteer at a retirement residence. Years later, it became a 12-year career working with retirement communities across North America, where he led teams responsible for implementing and supporting the operational software used by retirement communities.
Today, David works on the other side of the apartment door. He and his team help families manage every stage of a move while ensuring older adults remain active participants in the decisions being made about their homes and belongings.
The ONESource approach is built on thoughtful planning, respectful communication, and the belief that a successful move isn't simply about getting everything to a new address. It's about helping the new place feel like home.
