About Event

The Department of Philosophy and World Religions is pleased to announce the next event in this Spring’s Theorizing at Rowan lecture series.

On Monday April 13, at 5:00 pm, in Business 201, Bianca Waked, (Cornell University) will present a lecture entitled ‘A Body of One’s Own.’

Prof. Waked has provided the following description of her talk:

“Trans, fat, and disabled experiences have become increasingly intertwined by organizers, scholars, and healthcare workers alike. And yet, little has been said to explain what I am calling the "conceptual and political intimacy" shared across these three experiences. In this talk, I propose one way in which we might make sense of this intimacy—namely, the ways in which disabled, trans, and fat people are systematically oppressed by counterfactual possibilities. The upshot of an account is twofold: we can explain our intuitions around the shared conceptual and political intimacy across these categories, and we can bolster cross-movement solidarity without rendering sacrosanct the medically "unmodified" body.”

This event is co-sponsored by the Ric Edelman College of Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences.
