About Event

Can dialogue lead to real change on campus? Join us for an interactive session with Dr. Marjan Ehsassi, Executive Director of the Federation for Innovation in Democracy in North America (FIDE). Hosted by the Trust Collaboratory’s Listening Tables and Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Program (NECR) MSc Program at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies, this event will explore how structured dialogue on campus can move beyond conversation to shape policy and decision-making through citizens’ assemblies. These have been around for centuries, bringing people together to define critical issues, weigh evidence and tradeoffs, identify areas of agreement and disagreement, and generate actionable recommendations.

Dr. Ehsassi will speak about her work supporting citizens’ assemblies around the world, covered in her recent book Activated Citizenship and FIDE - North America, and explore what a university-based assembly process could look like.

Join students, faculty, and administrators to explore how these processes work, and to consider and examine how a citizen assembly could be developed and applied at Columbia.
