What happens when an MCP tool can actually charge for what it does?

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build a working multi-agent MCP workflow using the Qatom MCP, exploring how agents can discover services, publish tools, make payments, transfer custody, and create a verifiable record of what happened.

The Qatom MCP

The workshop uses the Qatom MCP as the practical foundation for exploring agentic commerce with MCP.

Qatom is building infrastructure for agents to discover and transact with services. Rather than simply talking about how payment-capable agents might work, this workshop gives you a chance to run the pieces yourself: an agent with its own identity can publish a tool, another agent can discover and pay for it, and the workflow can transfer custody between agents while maintaining an auditable record.

Matthew Mihok is the Technical Product Owner at Qatom and will guide the session from the MCP implementation through the agentic payment workflow.

What you'll build

Starting with a simple MCP server, you'll:

  • Create a catalog of services or tools.

  • Connect the catalog to the Qatom MCP.

  • Give an agent a non-custodial identity.

  • Publish tools to the catalog.

  • Have a purchasing agent discover and pay for a tool.

  • Watch the payment settle as part of the agent workflow.

  • Transfer custody from one agent to another.

  • Inspect a verifiable record of the workflow.

  • Handle a real failure live: an agent runs out of funds mid-workflow and the protocol recovers.

You'll leave with the code and audit log, yours to fork and continue experimenting with.

What you'll learn

The workshop makes the mechanics of agentic commerce concrete:

  • How identity and payment can attach to an MCP server without a traditional login.

  • How agents can hold, receive, and spend funds.

  • How agents can pay for tools and services.

  • How custody can move between agents.

  • How to make multi-agent transactions inspectable and auditable.

  • How payment failures can be handled within an agentic workflow.

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate, hands-on developer workshop.

Please come prepared with:

  • Comfort with one MCP client — Claude Desktop, Cursor, or a small Node.js/Python client.

  • Basic command-line experience.

  • An empty GitHub repository.

  • The workshop repository cloned in advance.

No prior identity or payment-protocol experience is required.

Come build it.

This isn't a slide-driven introduction to agentic payments. You'll have a working MCP workflow running on your machine by the end of the session — including a paid tool call, agent identity, custody transfer, failure recovery, and an audit trail you can inspect and fork.
