First Table: Learn to Play American Mahjong (2 Classes)

Curious about American Mahjong but not quite sure where to begin? Pull up a chair—this is your First Table.
First Table is House of Marson’s welcoming, 2-night hands-on beginner experience. It’s created for anyone who has never played, has watched from the sidelines wondering what on earth everyone is doing, or has tried to learn but still feels a little lost.
There are no silly questions, no experience is required, and perfection is absolutely not expected. We’ll learn, laugh, move the tiles around, and make sense of the game together—with a few fun House of Marson surprises woven into the experience.
Your registration includes both sessions:
SESSION ONE
Thursday, October 8, 2026 6-8:30 pm
SESSION TWO
Thursday, October 15, 2026 6-8:30 pm
Each session is 2½ hours, giving us five unhurried hours to explore the tiles, learn how to read the National Mah Jongg League card, practice the Charleston, understand calling and exposures, and play complete hands with plenty of guidance along the way.
And yes—by the end of your second session, you will be playing American Mahjong!
You’ll also learn the table etiquette and little traditions that make Mahjong much more than a game—it’s a reason to gather.
Make an evening of it! Happy hour at The Handsome Cab runs from 4:30–6:30 p.m., so come early and enjoy a quick bite or cocktail before class at special prices. A unique House of Marson Mahjong cocktail or mocktail will also be available for purchase.
Drinks and food may be ordered throughout the event, and we’ll take a planned break midway through each session to refresh, recharge, and perhaps order another little something.
House of Marson provides the venue, Mahjong sets, racks, mats, and everything needed to play.
A current National Mah Jongg League card is required for $15; bring your own (do not buy from Amazon, except directly from the League as they are incorrect and counterfeit) or purchase one from House of Marson the night of the event.
Your registration reserves your place for both sessions. Class is intentionally limited to eight guests—just two tables—so everyone receives personal instruction, encouragement, and plenty of time to practice.
