About Event

​The Industrial Design Society of America (NYC) and The New School IDSA chapter invite students and recent graduates to an evening of portfolio reviews, professional insight, and conversation.

​The event will begin with brief presentations from Rina Shin and Erica Eden, highlighting their professional work and career paths. Following the presentations, students will have the opportunity to receive, 1-on-1 feedback on their portfolios from one of three design professionals.

​

​PROGRAMMING

  • ​7pm: Guest presentations on previous work and career paths

  • ​7:50pm: ~10 minute, 1-on-1 portfolio reviews with guest designers and the host

  • ​9:20pm: Networking and refreshments

​

​If you’re looking to strengthen your portfolio, see how design professionals present their work, and are curious about different paths within the design industry, this event is for you.

​Portfolio reviews are on a sign-up basis. Limited spots are available, and students from the tri-state area are encouraged. This is our last student portfolio event for the year.

​FEATURED GUESTS

​Rina Shin | Rina is a New York-based, world-traveling design consultant and CMF designer with over a decade of experience shaping the colors, materials, and finishes of consumer products. She previously managed the CMF Design team at Motorola and has worked with companies including Motorola Mobility, Alcatel Mobile, Microsoft, Yang Design, and T-Mobile. As the founder of Unwrap CMF, Rina works across trend forecasting, color strategy, material innovation, manufacturing, and product execution, bringing CMF into the broader design process from early strategy through mass production. She also leads as co-chair of Women in Design NYC.

​

​Erica Eden | Erica is the founder of design research and strategy practice Citizen Collab as well as the founding partner of brand strategy studio Tandem & Co. She translates user needs and cultural shifts into tangible experiences for Fortune 500 clients, amassing 100s of product launches, and securing 25+ patents. Her approach combines empathy, creative vision, and strategic direction to drive growth across various industries, including Consumer Products, Food & Beverage, Spirits & Liquor, Financial Services, Mobility, Agriculture, and Health & Wellness.

​She’s previously done design, strategy, and consultancy work at Frog, PepsiCo, and Smart Design, where she led Femme Den, an initiative to improve everyday design for women through their perspectives.

​IDSA NYC HOST

​Kairu Tong | Kairu is a production technician at MakeLab, a 3D printing facility manufacturing for companies in consumer products, robotics, architecture, TV and more. He also works as a technician for Mo.na Gems, a bioplastic jewelry company dedicated to sustainable art, fashion, and accessories.

​He’s designed at the intersections of sustainability and design justice to make projects that emphasize joy over nihilism. His projects span across engagement jewelry, accessible footwear accessories, novel sustainable materials, and queer medical research. Kairu’s work has been recognized and exhibited by Parsons School of Design, Craft Contemporary LA, Draper Footwear Awards, and the Stonewall National Monument Visitor’s Center. Kairu is the current Education Initiatives Lead for IDSA NYC.
