​Beyond the Heart - Distinguished Lectures on the Future of Medicine and Health

​Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in industrialized countries, placing cardiovascular medicine at the center of modern healthcare. As such, it is closely connected to numerous medical subspecialties and shaped by technological advances as well as institutional and socioeconomic dynamics. The Beyond the Heart lecture series explores topics that transcend cardiovascular medicine and address the future of healthcare and medicine as a whole. The bi-monthly series is hosted by the German Heart Center Foundation at its headquarters at the Charité Campus Virchow Klinikum.

​Quantum computers operate on fundamentally different principles from classical computers, exploiting the laws of quantum mechanics to tackle problems beyond the reach of conventional computing. Although significant progress has been made, practical, fault-tolerant quantum computers are still under development. In this lecture, Dr. Heike Riel, a leading expert in quantum computing and quantum hardware, will introduce the basic principles of quantum computing and explain where quantum advantage may emerge over classical approaches. She will also discuss current technological challenges and show how the co-development of quantum hardware, software, and algorithms is paving the way for practical applications in medicine, materials discovery, chemistry, optimization, and artificial intelligence.
