About Event

This Roundtable is an opportunity for an in-depth consultation on this theme to inform workstreams of relevant activity in the run-up to, and beyond, COP30 at Belem. At the start of London Climate Action Week, a group of financial sector leaders were invited by FSD Africa and the UK’s Minister for Development, Baroness Chapman, to exchange ideas on how to scale private finance for A&R in Africa. This Roundtable is a continuation of that opening discussion in London which considered both the financing solutions (or transaction archetypes) that are already showing promise in A&R as well as the ecosystem changes that are needed for these financing solutions to be scaled up.

The London meeting and this Roundtable are part of a collaborative process that will culminate in a Call to Action at Belem on private financing of A&R. Those taking part in this process include private sector African and UK-based financial institutions, DFIs, think tanks and technical experts, donors and philanthropies. The process is open to all who have a serious interest in growing private finance for A&R in Africa and are willing to share their ideas and expertise.

Those attending (30-40) are expected to include representatives from African financial institutions, DFIs, donor agencies (including FCDO), MDBs, FSD Africa, think tanks. Workshop sessions to be facilitated by representatives from World Resources Institute and the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change. The objectives for this Roundtable are:

· To build consensus around the need for a specific focus on A&R financing, given the unique challenges in this space

· To invite participants to take on responsibility for driving outcomes in the priority areas of focus (supported by FSD Africa) in the run-up to Belem

· To agree a plan of action out to COP30 (and potentially, beyond)

· To welcome new participants to the process

More information can be found in the attached Concept Note.

We see COP30 as an important moment in raising the profile of private capital mobilisation for A&R financing in emerging markets. This is a theme that Brazil, as COP30 President, has been active in pushing. ACS2 is an important opportunity – and a desperately needed one – to get behind Brazil’s leadership and call for more systematic coordination in this critical space.
