Covid-Conscious Chess Workshop
A beginner chess workshop for covid-conscious adults! This workshop will be in study room 5 on the first floor (please note that no food is allowed in the study rooms). Respirators (KN95/KF94+) required, air purifiers will be in the classroom as well as throughout the first floor of the library. I (Sage) will take a rapid test before the workshop, but am not requiring attendees test. And (though this goes without saying) if you are a close contact for any communicable disease or are experiencing symptoms outside your norm (i.e. not caused by chronic illness), don't come!
Is this workshop right for me?
This workshop is a good fit for folks who have either A. never played chess, or B. know how the pieces move but are hoping to learn some strategy. If you're unsure whether you're enough of a beginner to benefit from this workshop, feel free to message me on Signal @sageanastasia.17 and we can chat!
How much does it cost?
The workshop is intentionally low-cost because it is also a learning opportunity for me! I have been teaching chess to youth for years, but this will be my first time teaching adults. The workshop is sliding scale $5-10+, but everyone is welcome regardless of ability to pay. My Venmo is @sapphireqs (profile picture is me taking a mirror selfie in a blue KN95).
Parking?
There is a free parking lot behind the library and paid parking meters on the other streets surrounding it.
I have accessibility questions!
Great! Message me on Signal @sageanastasia.17
So... what are your qualifications to be teaching this?
I have been playing chess since I was a toddler, and have had a career teaching chess for over five years. In that time, I have worked with schools, rec centers, and summer camps throughout New England providing chess education to kids ages 4-13 through group lessons and private lessons, both in-person and remotely. I work with a wide variety of kids, ranging from students learning the game for the first time, to students taking chess for social-emotional skill building, to students doing chess competitively.
Don't you have to be really smart for chess?
Anyone can play chess, I promise :) Despite its social prestige, chess is simply a board game just like any other board game.
