We'll be reading and discussing: Applying Cognitive Design Patterns to General LLM Agents
The authors, including John Laird, creator of the Soar cognitive architecture, argue that LLM agent builders are independently reinventing 40 years of cognitive architecture research without knowing it.
They extract recurring "design patterns" from 100+ pre-transformer architectures, map them onto today's agentic LLM systems, and use the gaps to predict where the field is heading next.
