​Digitising the Grid for Demand Flexibility at Scale

​As electrification, decarbonisation, and decentralisation of the power sector increases system complexity, finding ways to balance supply and demand at lower cost has become a central policy challenge. Demand flexibility, the ability to shift, reduce, or adjust electricity use in response to grid conditions or price signals, is already helping some electricity markets work more efficiently. The International Energy Agency estimates that digitally enabled demand response could cut renewable curtailment by more than 25% by 2030, lowering system costs and improving outcomes for consumers, but much of this potential remains untapped.

​This invitation-only, closed-door roundtable, co-hosted by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and Centre for Net Zero, will explore the key building blocks needed to create a large-scale market for demand flexibility. With a focus on India and other emerging economies, the discussion will draw on research and practical lessons from Great Britain and Australia to examine how market creation can be accelerated, where the biggest barriers remain, and how international cooperation can help deliver progress.
