Awakening From the Meaning Crisis
Inspired by John Vervaeke's series "Awakening from the Meaning Crisis," we're going to try to understand and break down the meaning crisis we find ourselves in.
This is going to be a free form discussion where we dive into the material from the series and try to understand if we're in a meaning criss, why and how we got here, and how we might be able to move forward.
Here are the themes of each week, with the topics we'll draw on(sources and reading to be added later!):
Week 1: What is "meaning"? Why is it in a crisis?
Wisdom, Insight, Rationality
Consciousness, Mindfulness, Flow
Truth and Bullshit
Self-Transcendence
Week 2: History of the meaning crisis:
How did we get here? Did we ever have real meaning in the past?
Role of philosophy and religion
How did the modern world crowd out meaning?
What is the role of technology in all this (specifically, social media and AI).
Week 3: Social Transformation
What do we need to do as a society to move forward?
Where do solutions lie — policy? community? philosophy? Technology?
Week 4: Personal Transformation
What can we do, as an individual and a community, to bring more meaning into our own lives?
How can we take steps to increase our own wisdom and that of our community?
