Black holes break the rules. They warp space, stretch time, and swallow light itself, yet for most of history they were nothing more than a wild idea scribbled into the margins of Einstein's equations. How do we know they're real? And what do they actually tell us about the universe we live in?
In this talk, Dr. Michael Coleman Miller takes us on a journey from Newton's gravity to Einstein's radical rethink of space and time, and from there into the truly bizarre territory where black holes live. Get ready to have your brain gently broken (in a fun way).

About the Speaker
Dr. Michael Coleman Miller is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Maryland and a theoretical astrophysicist whose research focuses on black holes, neutron stars, and the extremes of gravity. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics, summa cum laude, from Hillsdale College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. Over his career he has published more than 180 papers and racked up over 17,000 citations for his work on compact objects and gravitational physics. He is co-author of the textbook Gravitational Waves in Physics and Astrophysics, and his contributions to the field have earned him honors including a Radboud Excellence Professorship and the Rossi Prize from the American Astronomical Society. He was also recently named a 2025 Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to understanding neutron stars and black holes.
