About Event

Hosted by Daybreak Labs | AI Security Panel Featuring Sandia National Laboratories

AI Security is not a feature – it’s a discipline that spans data, models, and human decision-making which must be intentionally addressed at the system-level. Ready to learn more about AI practices and tools from national security experts?

Join us for an exclusive Lunch & Learn with a panel of AI experts from Sandia National Laboratories to explore the intersections of risk priorities and security threats across government and private sector applications. The panel will share best practices and approaches to translate emerging AI security risks into business-relevant impacts that align with national security priorities. This event seeks to engage you in discussion around this critical topic and identify potential collaboration opportunities.

What We’ll Cover:

  • Framing the AI Risk Landscape: Identifying priority concerns from a national security perspective, to include strategic tensions (speed vs security, innovation vs regulation) and human + AI teaming risks.

  • Public-Private Partnership Imperative: We have a shared responsibility to integrate AI security through the technology lifecycle and align with national security goals.

  • Trustworthy AI as a Competitive Advantage: How should we think about technical solutions that ensure model integrity and trust? What risks do tailored versus broad solutions buy down?

  • Role of National Laboratories/Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs): Sandia National Laboratories and equivalents function as an “honest broker” to provide guidance and expertise on technology adoption in a secure manner and has convening authority to bring together diverse stakeholders. Let’s discuss collaboration opportunities!

Who should attend?

Startups/founders building AI or AI security products, building products/solutions for security for data centers, chief information officers, and corporate cybersecurity leaders.

About Our Sandia National Laboratories Speakers:

Amanda Dodd, Director of Computation and Analysis for National Security: In addition to her Director role, Amanda Dodd is the Sandia National Laboratories Homeland Security Program Area Director and a member of the Artificial Intelligence Board of Directors and Cyber Board of Directors. Amanda leads the center in anticipating, addressing, and reducing national security risks by developing and apply cross-domain computational and analytical capabilities in cyber, artificial intelligence, advanced computing and decision science, as well as contributing to all of Sandia’s missions to advance the Labs’ capabilities for nuclear deterrence needs, today and tomorrow.

Gayle Thayer, Technical and Program Manager: Dr. Gayle Thayer leads innovative research initiatives in Secure Learning and Algorithms and Counter Adversarial Machine Learning, providing impact to the missions of the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and Intelligence Community. Dr. Thayer leverages her expertise in quantum physics, computational modeling, and national security to advance the integration of AI in high-consequence environments. Her work emphasizes the development of reliable AI models and the identification and mitigation of AI-specific threat vectors, ensuring robust defenses against emerging national security challenges.

Philip Kegelmeyer, Senior Scientist: Philip Kegelmeyer is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA. His primary research has been in machine learning and AI, especially as applied to ugly, obdurate, real-world data. Since 2013, Dr. Kegelmeyer has been leading a handful of research efforts in “Counter Adversarial Data Analytics”. The core idea is to take a vulnerability assessment approach to quantitatively assessing, perhaps countering, the result of an adversary knowing and adapting to exactly whatever specific data analysis method might be in use. His work has resulted in over eighty refereed publications, two patents, and commercial software licenses.

Jonathan Crussell, Distinguished Scientist: Dr. Jonathan Crussell is a cybersecurity researcher at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, where he began his career as an intern in the Cyber for Cyber Defenders (CCD) program. His research interests include software understanding and AI/ML, with a focus on ensuring that agentic workflows can be applied safely and effectively.

About Sandia National Laboratories:

Sandia National Laboratories Livermore, CA site manages the Labs’ Deterrence, Science & Energy portfolio, oversees multiple Nuclear Deterrence programs for Livermore Valley weapon systems, and has a leading role in the Labs-wide Energy Security efforts. In particular, the Homeland Security Program is focused on increasing our nation’s digital and physical critical infrastructure security and resilience to natural and human-made threats. Dedicated to innovation, national security, and community partnership, the Livermore site is commemorating seven decades of advancing cutting-edge technologies and scientific research that safeguard the nation.
