About Event

Community Calls are a bi-weekly meeting of any member of the Metagov Community to discuss community initiatives, topics, and issues. They were started in April 2024, and starting from May 23 will run on a bi-weekly basis on Thursdays at 12-1pm Eastern Time.

Activity:

Thank you for joining me for the 1st SAP playtest.

I have a hypothesis I want to test about this simple allocation tool I have designed, and we will discuss what that was after the experiment.

Imagine you each run an organization. For simplicity’s sake your organization has your name, although you can add a suffix, like Steve.org.

For some reason, you have a pool of funds to distribute amongst yourselves for a yearly operating expensed which we will call the $Budget. Let’s say a million dollars, but we’ll divide it into 1000 $1000 allocations.

Your organizations each have an ideal amount of funding, less than the total $Budget, you would like them to be funded so that they may pursue reasonable goals they might have. But your organizations depend on the survival of your local ecosystem, so you also have target allocations for everyone else in mind as well.

Before we begin the exercise, you will be writing down how you, personally, would allocate the $Budget.

Then we will have 15 minutes or until everyone is satisfied with the results to each negotiate to get the final allocations as possible to the secret target allocations we have written down.

(switch to shared spreadsheet view)

At any point, you can put in your allocation votes of what you would give each organization, or change your allocation votes by sending them to me in a private chat. Or you can change your row of votes in the shared spreadsheet yourself. These don’t have to add to 1000. I will rearrange the allocations to each organization into a column from lowest to highest. Then I will highlight the highest the row where the total allocations are less then the $Budget. At the end of the experiment whatever is contained in the row highlighted at that point will become the final allocations.

You do not have to vote your secret allocation goals. You could allocate 1000 to your organization alone, or whatever strategy to get the final row selected to be as close a possible to your secret allocations. You can use nearly any tactic, you can offer a bribe to someone through private chat, either money (which will be counted as moving that much from your project to theirs at the end), or that you will increase your allocation to theirs if they increase their allocation to yours. You can ask for people to approach you with offers/bribes, or openly offer collusion over the shared voice channel. You can make a misleading set of allocations and change them later.
