Svartlöga Yoga Retreat #13 – From Ancient to Modern Yoga
Yoga today is a living, breathing mosaic—shaped by centuries of transmission, transformation, and adaptation. In our modern world, yoga is often associated with movement, strength, and flexibility. But beneath the surface of every pose, every breath, and every moment of stillness, there runs a deep current of ancient wisdom. At this retreat, we turn toward that current. We ask: Where does our practice come from? What has been carried forward, and what has been transformed—or left behind?
"To know where we are going, we must also understand where we have been."
This retreat is an invitation to explore the roots of yoga while honoring its modern expressions. Together, we will trace the threads that connect the ancient philosophies of the Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras, and the tantric traditions to the way we move, breathe, and relate today. We will investigate what lineage means—not as a fixed inheritance, but as a living transmission that flows through time, adapting to each new body, each new culture, each new heart.
Through practice, dialogue, and shared inquiry, we will explore:
What is the essence of the ancient teachings, and how do they appear in our modern practice?
How have power, colonization, and cultural exchange shaped the yoga we know?
What does it mean to practice with integrity—rooted in tradition, yet responsive to the present?
How can we honor the past without being bound by it, and innovate without losing connection?
As always, the retreat is co-created. We will bring our diverse backgrounds, lineages, and curiosities into a shared space of exploration. Some of us may carry deep knowledge of Sanskrit texts; others may hold wisdom from modern somatic practices or embodied spirituality. All of it is welcome. Together, we will weave a tapestry that honors both continuity and change.
At Svartlöga, surrounded by the sea and the summer light, we will practice as a tribe—cooking together, resting together, practicing together, and growing together. The rhythm of the island supports immersion. The community becomes both mirror and container. In this sacred space, we can ask the big questions and let the answers arise not only in the mind, but in the body and the heart.
Whether you are new to the philosophical roots of yoga or have been walking this path for years, you are welcome. The group will be curated to create a rich and respectful dialogue between perspectives, traditions, and experiences. Together, we will deepen our practice—not only as individuals, but as a living part of a lineage that continues to unfold.
Let us explore where we come from.
Let us understand where we are.
Let us also, gently, ponder where we are going.
Namaste.
