About Event

The cost of fraud is more than money. It is the loss of trust.

And that loss comes at a high price for Europe, at a time when it is already working to strengthen its competitiveness.

Behind the numbers are people whose lives can be deeply affected by scams. At the same time, increasingly sophisticated criminal networks are creating growing costs for businesses, consumers and the wider economy. Europe needs to raise its game.

This event will bring new evidence to the table, featuring exclusive findings from a Euroconsumers–Amazon survey of more than 10,000 consumers across ten European countries and new research on the wider economic impact of online fraud.

Through two panel discussions, experts, policymakers and people with first-hand experience will explore the real cost of online scams and what can be done to tackle them.

Panel 1 – The Human Cost of Online Fraud: New Consumer Evidence from Across Europe

Beyond financial losses, scams can have lasting emotional consequences, change consumer behaviour and undermine trust in digital services.

Drawing on the survey findings, this panel will explore the experiences of scam victims, the challenges they face when seeking help and what businesses, public authorities and consumer organisations can do to better prevent fraud, support victims and restore confidence. A personal testimony will put a face to the numbers.

A personal testimony will bring the human impact to life.

Featuring:

  • Matylda Pogorzelska, Project Manager at the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA)

  • Amber Bechrouri, Director Public Policy at Amazon

  • Jorij Abraham, Managing Director of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA)

  • Ayleen Charlotte, Founder of S.A.F.E.

Panel 2 – The Economic Cost of Online Fraud: Why It Matters for Europe's Economy and Competitiveness

Online fraud also affects the wider economy by undermining consumer trust, reducing online spending and discouraging participation in digital markets.

This panel will examine why tackling fraud is essential to Europe's competitiveness and how stronger cooperation between businesses, policymakers and other key players can help build a safer digital economy.

A personal testimony will bring the figures to life.

Featuring:

  • Monika Kopcheva, Head of Unit Security in the Digital Age (DG HOME), European Commission

  • Jorij Abraham, Managing Director of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA)

  • Lucia Napoli, Quantitative Social Research Consultant at Euroconsumers

  • Efthymis Antonopoulos, Policy & Advocacy Manager at Victim Support Europe, who will share a personal testimony
