Election Briefing: 88 Days, 88 Seats: the polling, the pendulum, and the parliament you'll be lobbying in December

About
Victoria has had three premiers in three years and, on today’s numbers, no clear favourite to hold the job past November. Ben Carroll took over on 28 July with 123 days until the election. On September 1, there will be 88 days till the election, the same number as the seats in the lower house, of which 45 is a majority. Nobody is near 45.

The maths is brutal in every direction. The Coalition needs to gain 16 seats and a uniform swing of 7.6% — assuming it loses nothing to One Nation or the independents, in a cycle where a few hundred votes could unseat a former Liberal leader in Hawthorn and the current one in Kew. Labor is defending a fourth term with a Premier the state has barely met.
