Meet your host, a Brixton local, at the Brixton Culture Capital Distillery. Come a little early if you'd like to grab a coffee and settle before others arrive.
The experience begins with a short grounding tour through the history of Brixton on the streets where it happened. You'll visit Windrush Square, the home of the Black Cultural Archive and the place with the most monuments per square foot in London. You'll learn about the generation that arrived from the Caribbean and remade British life. You'll find out how Atlantic Road came to be known as The Frontline, and how Brixton helped shape British politics. Through Brixton's markets, you'll experience the sights, smells and sounds of a neighbourhood that has been one of the engines of British culture for decades.
The tour is just a taste, enough to get your bearings, prepare you to explore more and spark ideas for the rum you're about to make.
Back at the distillery, you'll taste your way through a flight of rums and learn about rum's unique connection to many of the cultures that make Brixton what it is. Rum is the world's most misunderstood spirit. By the end of this tasting, you'll understand rum in a way most people who drink it never do.
Then it's time to make your rum. In small teams, create your recipe, measure the spices and botanicals that will make your bottle taste like no one else's, and witness the distillation process begin.
While your rum is distilling, you'll head round the corner to a Jamaican restaurant that has fed this neighbourhood for over 20 years. The owner hosts you through a proper sit-down meal, included in your ticket, and guides you through the dining experience with the fascinating stories behind the food in a way only he can.
By the time you've finished eating, your rum is ready. Finish it to taste, then bottle it, name it, and label it. Before you go, everyone pours a measure of their own creation and raises a glass together: to Brixton, to what you've made, to new experiences with new friends. Leave with a 200ml bottle, one sip of which will always bring you back to your day in our corner of this amazing city.
