A relaxed walk and talk for Canberra's curious, cross-disciplinary people working for purpose.
Do you work across strategy, communications, programs, policy, partnerships, advocacy, operations, or a bit of everything?
Do you have a career path that makes perfect sense to you, but is slightly harder to explain at a BBQ?
Or are you simply curious about what it means to be a generalist?
Join us for a relaxed walk around Lake Burley Griffin to celebrate International Generalist Day 2026.
Hosted by Joanna Le, a Canberra-based generalist and member of Generalist World, in partnership with For Purpose, this event is especially for people working across Canberra's not-for-profit, community, advocacy, social impact and community sectors.
There are no presentations, awkward networking exercises or name tags required. We'll walk, chat, meet some new people and stop for coffee along the way.
What to expect
🌀 A relaxed 5 km-ish walk around Lake Burley Griffin
☕ A coffee stop along the way
💬 A few optional conversation prompts to get us talking
🤝 New connections with people doing interesting work across the community and for purpose sector
🌏 A chance to be part of International Generalist Day alongside gatherings around the world
We'll meet outside Walt and Burley at 10am and finish at around 11:30am.
Come on your own or bring a colleague. Kids and friendly dogs are very welcome too.
Who is it for?
You don't need to have "generalist" in your job title, most of us don't!
You might be someone who:
works across several different functions or disciplines
connects people, ideas and projects across an organisation
has moved between different sectors, roles or professions
enjoys making sense of messy or complex problems
has a portfolio, non-linear or "squiggly" career
is simply curious about generalism and wants to meet some interesting people
You also don't need to be a Generalist World or For Purpose community member to come along.
About International Generalist Day
International Generalist Day is organised by Generalist World, a global community celebrating people with broad skillsets, diverse interests and non-linear careers.
Across cities around the world, generalists will come together to meet, swap stories and celebrate the value of seeing connections across disciplines, ideas and communities.
About your hosts
Joanna Le is an independent consultant and Co-Founder working across communications, strategy, partnerships, governance, project management and social impact. She joined Generalist World about 18 months ago, and particularly loves the variety of people, organisations and problems that come with a generalist working life.
For Purpose supports people and organisations working to create positive change through training, coaching, strategy and advisory work.
A few practical things
Wear comfortable shoes and bring whatever you need for Canberra's September weather.
We'll confirm the meeting point with registered attendees before the event.
