The artists gathered in Dancing with Trash share a refusal to treat waste as an end point. Whether they photograph it, cast it, print from it, paint it, weld it or simply carry it into the gallery and balance it against a wall, they approach the discarded as material still in motion – halfway through a cycle rather than fallen out of one.

Several practices begin at the moment of abandonment. Ryohei Usui finds plastic containers on the pavement and remakes them in glass; Ser Serpas collects furniture from the streets around the venue and returns it there 3 afterward; Calvin Miceli-Nelson and CFGNY build from salvage; C&K goes further back still, into the studio, exhibiting what artists sweep out before anyone arrives. Others catch waste earlier, while it is still being produced: Nicole Coson prints from the crates and pallets that carry goods across oceans, Yuyan Wang edits the promotional imagery that manufacturing generates about itself, SIDE CORE films the city digging itself up and resurfacing, and Bagus Pandega wires obsolete players and recorders into machines that register what nickel and palm oil leave behind. Motoyuki Daifu, Lee Kit and Ken Sasaki look at the slow domestic version – the packaging, the worn cloth, the belongings kept too long – where the line between possession and rubbish is drawn and redrawn daily.

What unites them is not an ecological message but an attentiveness to form. Faisal Habibi's recombined commodities are finished with the care of design objects; Hikari Ono's clay slabs turn the marks of crushing into surface; Gary-Ross Pastrana files, saws and recasts an object until only its material is left to speak; Sollee Kim's welded metal insists that a sculpture and its name are made together; Dusadee Huntrakul handles fragments like relics; Ken Kagami and dpgp78 take the lowest tier of visual culture – the gag, the zine, the photocopied poster – and give it back with affection. Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi and ikkibawiKrrr widen the frame to ecologies where decay is simply how things grow.

The beauty they find is not a redemption of trash. It is the recognition that waste is where the value systems of a society become visible – what is kept, what is thrown out, and by whom – and that looking closely at the discarded is one way of looking at everything else.
