What is a body? Embodiment, Agency and Meaning in Lagos
What does it mean to live in one's body in a disembodied city such as Lagos? As with any space, we encounter Lagos through our bodies particularly through the prism of gender, class, age and other social positions that influence where we can go, what we do, how we show up and how we are received. Bibi Bakare’s work on embodiment and agency in the black diaspora asks us to take this relationship seriously between the body and the place, arguing that the body is the basis of lived experience and that Places acquire meaning through the bodies that inhabit and experience them. Thinking about Lagos through this lens asks us to consider what the city does to our bodies and what our bodies are doing to the city every day.
