Partition in Cinema and Fiction of the 1960s in Pakistan

​We'd love to see you this Saturday! We’ll begin with a reading of excerpts from acclaimed feminist writer Jamila Hashmi’s “Ban-Baas” (Exile) in Urdu and English. After that we are thrilled to have Kamran Asdar Ali (professor of anthropology, Middle East Studies and Asian Studies at the University of Texas) give a talk entitled “Partition Violence, Women and the Nation in Pakistan’s Cinema from the 1960s.” The talk will discuss clips from “Lakhon Mein Eik (1967)” to highlight how the female body, irrespective of its religious affiliation, became the primary site on which communities fought horrific battles to safeguard their ‘honour’ during partition. There will follow a Q&A with Kamran, moderated by Sadia Bajwa (assistant professor of South Asian Studies at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).
