Something to Say
Something to Say
Starting imperfect conversations that matter
A free community workshop with Thea May from Working With Voice
We all have conversations we wish we could have about the world our children are growing up in.
Sometimes we just don't know how to start them.
How do you actually bring it up?
With your mum.
Your neighbour.
Another parent at the school gate.
A friend you love who sees things differently.
Someone at work.
It can feel tender AF.
So we either avoid the conversation altogether, or go in so charged that it becomes a fight.
But what if there was another way?
What if we stopped thinking about these conversations as opportunities to convince people, and started seeing them as opportunities to open a door?
We need new tools for this moment
We are living through enormous social and systemic change.
The issues touching our lives are becoming more complex, more personal and more charged.
And while we absolutely need collective action, campaigning and protest, we also need the small, everyday conversations that happen alongside them.
The dining-table conversations.
The school-gate conversations.
The "can I ask you something?" conversations.
This workshop is part of Something to Say, a new free community resource I'm creating to help people start those conversations.
And I don't want to create it alone. 👥👣🧡
I want to build it with communities like yours, test what actually helps, and refine it together so it can be shared far and wide.
In this workshop, we'll explore:
🌱 Moving from convincing to connecting
How to have conversations that create the possibility of dialogue, rather than trying to win someone over.
💬 Finding the words
Simple ways to say what you think and feel without turning the conversation into a fight.
🤝 Meeting different kinds of conversations
Whether you're talking with someone you love, someone who disagrees, or someone who simply hasn't thought about the issue before.
🌊 Staying grounded
Two simple Speaking Flow nervous-system practices for tending to the stress, anger and activation that can come up when something really matters to us.
🗣️ Trying it for real
You'll have a chance to safely test some simple openings and scripts, and help shape the Something to Say resource as we go. 🙏
You’ll leave with
Simple tools for grounding yourself before & during a difficult conversation
Practical prompts and scripts you can actually use
A different way of thinking about conversations across difference
More confidence to start imperfectly
The opportunity to help shape a resource designed to support people like you
No perfect words required.
Just something to say, and the willingness to try a different way.
This workshop is free (why?)
I'm offering Something to Say completely FREE to grassroots communities because I truly believe in the collective power of having small connected conversations about hard things.
It’s a ripple effect. 🌊
We need more people equipped to have these types of conversations.
They really matter. Your voice makes a difference.
The resource will be made freely available to share, adapt and pass on. 💪🏼✊🏽 (Share it far and wide, and invite me into other communities you're part of so we can do it together there too.)
The more conversations it helps begin, the more people are talking about really important stuff.
Come as you are, feelings welcome.
Bring the thing you've been wanting to say.
