Conscious Cinema: CIRCLES Screening
The Conscious Cinema Social Justice Film Series returns with a community screening of CIRCLES, A Restorative Justice Project, directed by Cassidy Friedman, on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 6–8:30 PM at BLU Art & Wellness Gallery in downtown Long Beach. This free film screening is part of Conscious Cinema, a Black-centered social justice film series open to community.
The documentary follows former football star and Hurricane Katrina refugee, Eric Butler, as he works with Black and Latino students at a West Oakland high school and uses Restorative Justice to challenge punishment-based approaches to school discipline.
Youth leaders, parents, educators, mentors, RJ practitioners, community organizers, justice-impacted families, and anyone interested in creating safer, more supportive schools and communities are encouraged to attend.

Through the art of powerful films, community dialogue, and political education, Conscious Cinema creates space to examine racial injustice, honor Black resistance, strengthen community connection, and inspire collective action.
Each showing is more than a screening. It is an opportunity to explore history, political education, the impact of systemic oppression, and lived experiences behind the stories on screen. We connect those stories to issues affecting our communities today and imagine what meaningful action towards racial justice can look like. Everyone is invited and encouraged to meet folks involved in local social justice campaigns and organizations who are also present.
Conscious Cinema is a space for reflection, healing, creative inspiration, and collective learning.
