The Wave Club — Neuronal Traveling Waves & Cortical Oscillations This Month: Dr. Yanliang Shi We can't wait to welcome Dr. Yanliang Shi to this month's Wave Club. Yanliang is an Associate Research Scholar at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute (Engel Lab) and a researcher in the International Brain Laboratory; before Princeton he was a postdoctoral fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and earned his PhD in Physics from Stony Brook. His work probes the mechanisms of brain dynamics and computation across cellular, circuit, and system scales, pairing theory and computation with model-driven data analysis. His recent research — spatiotemporal cortical-state dynamics in prefrontal cortex, correlations in structured networks, and attention-dependent intrinsic timescales — sits right at the math-meets-measurement core of this series. J. Craig Venter InstituteJ. Craig Venter Institute About the series The Wave Club is a monthly virtual seminar dedicated entirely to neuronal traveling waves and cortical oscillations — a collaborative hub for the mathematical, computational, and experimental neuroscientists working out how rhythmic activity propagates across the cortex and what it does for cognition. It's co-organized by the Ermentrout Lab (G. Bard Ermentrout, University of Pittsburgh), a pioneer of nonlinear neural dynamics, phase-locking, and spatiotemporal pattern modeling, and the Jacobs Lab — the Electrophysiology, Memory, and Navigation Laboratory (Joshua Jacobs, Columbia University) — known for human and rodent intracranial recordings, brain stimulation, and the role of traveling waves in memory and navigation. Recurring themes: how waves coordinate phase relationships across brain regions; how local circuits, synaptic coupling, and conduction delays generate macro-scale waves; and how waves gate information transfer, support memory, and shape behavior. This event is hosted at the Frontier Tower:

We are transforming a 16-floor tower in San Francisco into a self-governed vertical village—a hub for frontier technologies and creative arts. Tier-one labs presenting AI, Ethereum, biotech, neuroscience, longevity, robotics, makerspace, human flourishing, and arts & music. These floors will house innovators and creators pushing the boundaries of human potential in a post-AI-singularity world.

Apply here for founding citizenship: https://frontiertower.io/apply

Why should I become a citizen?

  • Be part of creating the first self-governed vertical village

  • Connect with the most creative people in the city

  • Get access to all floors, free event space & movement floor
