PRIVATE VIEWING of 'Perjalanan sebuah kisah: Life as it happens' | An Art Exhibition by Djuwadi |
Ahead of the exhibition's public opening, we're gathering Island Club members and friends for a private viewing and drinks — a first, unhurried look at Djuwadi's work before the doors open to everyone else.
Expect wine, easy conversation, and the chance to see the prints up close alongside fellow islanders and friends of the Ubah Rumah residency.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Working across woodcut printing and carving, street murals, visual and performance art, and collaborative public projects, Indonesian artist Djuwadi's work is a process of journeying with and being in this world.
'Perjalanan sebuah kisah: Life as it happens' presents 39 woodcut prints and blocks shaped by the artist's evolving dialogue between past and present, drawn from his time living and travelling across Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Japan, India, Australia and Southeast Asia.
Known for his lively energy and intuitive ability to connect with people, Djuwadi's practice is rooted in community engagement and social justice — themes of ecological stewardship, the lives of indigenous and rural communities, democracy and political participation, and personal and collective memory recur throughout his work. Rather than working from a studio, he often builds his practice through workshops in public spaces, where art becomes a social act and a way of building empathy and relationships.
His work reflects a twenty-year commitment to the art and social practice of woodcut printing, and to a compassionate engagement with the world — shaped by the political upheavals he has lived through in Indonesia. He belongs to a dynamic tradition of contemporary Indonesian art that engages critically with social processes and everyday life through direct action and collective artmaking.
In keeping with his socially-engaged practice, the exhibition itself becomes a gathering space — for dialogue and co-learning through workshops and story-exchanges with the artist.
Presented by Blueprint Art Space in partnership with Nikoi Island and Ubah Rumah Art Residency. Curated by Ernest Goh and Alecia Neo, co-artistic directors of the Ubah Rumah Art Residency on Nikoi Island.
