When Things Went Wrong: The History Behind GMP

Every horror story has an origin. So does GMP.
There was a time when many of the safeguards we now take for granted simply did not exist. Products could reach patients without the testing, oversight, documentation, and quality controls expected today. And some of the regulations that now shape life sciences were created only after real people were harmed.
This session takes a look at the events that changed the industry and the lessons that followed. We’ll explore how major public health tragedies helped shape Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and other GxP requirements, and why rules around documentation, testing, manufacturing controls, clinical research, and product safety are much more than regulatory red tape.
Because understanding the rule is one thing. Understanding why the rule exists changes how you approach the work.
For anyone interested in manufacturing, quality, regulatory affairs, clinical operations, research, or another regulated area of life sciences, this session will give you context that can help the industry make a lot more sense. You’ll start to see how the regulations connect to real patient safety and why seemingly small decisions can matter so much.
We’ll also introduce some of the career paths responsible for protecting those standards today, including quality, regulatory affairs, clinical operations, compliance, and more.
The goal is not to memorize regulations. It is to understand the history behind them, the people they are meant to protect, and why life sciences professionals are expected to take them seriously.
