About Event

Neighbors and congregants of “the Chapel” are invited for the first of three emergency preparedness training classes. Our goal is to help neighbors prepare while growing neighborhood solidarity, and build up the Chapel as a resilience hub in times of crisis.

If you’re interested in learning preparedness skills for your family, or want to help organize the neighborhood in awareness of the church as a resilience hub, please join.

This non-religious event is intentionally open to the public. Neighbors within walking distance including shop owners, students, university staff, members of other churches, preparedness experts or complete newbies, all are invited.

The class is taught by Shirah Wagner of Resilient Peeps, and co-hosted by the University Lutheran Chapel and the Sierra Pacific Synod of the ELCA. This church is a welcoming and affirming space for all.

If you want to be part, but cannot join, please email resilience@spselca.org. The full series includes these Sunday workshops:

  • Nov 15: Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness 101

  • Dec 6: Go Bag Assembly Party

  • Jan 17: Neighborhood Asset Mapping

What you’ll learn in the first class on November 15:

Bay Area hazards most likely to affect Berkeley, including earthquakes, wildfire smoke, extreme heat, power outages, and evacuation. What to do in the first moments, how to receive reliable information, and how to make preparedness manageable rather than overwhelming.

Takeaway: You’ll leave with a personal starting point, local resource guidance, and a simple priority list for the next month.
