About Event

They know it's time to leave the park. So why are you on your fifth "shoes, please"?

This workshop is about what happens in your kid's brain and body between knowing what to do and doing it.

For parents and caregivers of younger kids (~3-8+) who keep hitting the same hard moments, especially transitions, routines, overwhelming places, or the hour after school.

In 75 minutes, live online, you'll take one real moment with your own kid from "they won't" to "here's what might be making this hard, and here's what I'll try first."

What we'll do

  • Describe what happened, not what it felt like. "He ignored me" leads to a consequence. "He said okay and kept building" leads to a question you can answer.

  • Find the hidden steps. "Put your shoes on" means stop playing, remember what's next, start, keep going, and tolerate the socks. Once you know which step breaks down, you know where to help.

  • Consider more than one reason. Trouble starting, losing track, and shoes that hurt look the same from the doorway. Each one needs a different response.

  • Check what's realistic for their age. Barbara's Brain + Body Development Guide shows what's usually in reach and what still takes a lot of effort, so you can tell when you're asking for more independence than your kid has yet.

  • Pick one change that fits. A timer won't help a kid whose shoes hurt. You'll match your first move to what you think is hard and decide what "easier" will look like.

  • Bring the teacher in. Kids often act differently at school. You'll leave with a question that shows what's helping there, so you aren't arguing over who sees the real kid.

All writing is private. Sharing out loud is always optional.

About Barbara

Barbara Hubert, PhD, spent over a decade as a special education teacher and administrator in NYC public schools, where her job was understanding why kids get stuck and what helps them. Her background is in functional behavior assessment and crisis intervention, the process schools use to figure out what's behind a child's behavior. She has trained future teachers on how to build inclusive learning environments as graduate faculty at Hunter College, Brooklyn College, and NYU, written early elementary curriculum, and advised families on IEPs. She is a founding advisory member of the National Association for Curriculum Design. She started Little Brains & Bodies to give parents the same lens specialists use: how a kid's brain and body shape what they can do in the moment.
