About Event

There's a quiet revolution happening in scientific research.

It’s been a pivotal year for the future of research — not just how it’s done, but how it’s presented, by whom, and for whom. This opening night gathers 10 researcher-creatives who translate their work beyond papers into tangible artifacts: code as sculpture, EEG as fashion, haptic/shape interfaces, bio-engineered flowers, and more. Come meet the people working on science you can touch, hold, and share.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Gallery walkthrough in an open-concept gallery featuring researcher-creatives and their installations,

  • Keynote + artist Q&As on stage,

  • Exclusive, printed books featuring full-colour interviews from The Distressed Scientists’ Department to take home, stamp, and collect signatures

  • Wax seals and web sockets, in the same room.

For scientists, researchers, builders, artists, funders, and friends curious about what the future of scientific research can look like.

Smart-casual attire encouraged. To preserve the artwork (some pieces include wiring/electronics), no food or drink will be served. You may bring water; please keep bottles in a small bag.

Capacity is limited; RSVP approval required. If you can no longer attend, please cancel to free your spot for the waitlist. The gallery will be open for public walkthroughs November 18th and 19th from 12-7 pm.

ABOUT

The Distressed Scientists’ Dept. (TDSD) is a mixed-media science haus borne out of a PhD-to-be’s quarrel with how research is shown. Part gallery, part notebook, part dialogue, it is a living experiment in the forms scientific research can take at its best—how we get there, and how we communicate it.

This event is made possible by our venue sponsor, Pebblebed. Pebblebed is a technical early stage VC founded by Pam Vagata (cofounder of OpenAI, ran AI for Stripe, inventor of FBLearner Flow); Keith Adams (founded Facebook AI Research, was chief architect at Slack, 20th engineer at VMWare); Luke Byrne (former partner at Tapestry) and Tammie Siew (former Sequoia Southeast Asia investor, former Sequoia & GGV backed founder).
