UnCut Gems: Training Custom AI Partners with Google Gemini GEMs

Hello All!

As we continue to explore AI partnerships in our learning environments, we're discovering that one-size-fits-all approaches don't serve the unique needs of educators and learners. Just as we differentiate instruction for our students, we need AI tools that understand our specific contexts, challenges, and goals. How might we create AI partners that truly know our work and can support the authentic learning experiences outlined in the Portrait of a Nevada Learner?

In this 3-hour collaborative experience, we'll work together to explore how custom GEMs (Generative Enhanced Models) in Google Gemini can be trained to become specialized thought partners for educators. Building on the TAMER framework foundation, we'll discover how personalized AI collaborators can enhance our instructional design, administrative efficiency, and student support while maintaining the human connections that make education transformative.

You'll learn to create and train your own custom GEMs - specialized AI partners designed specifically for your educational context and needs.

The questions we'll explore during this session:

  1. What are GEMs and how do they deepen our AI partnerships beyond generic tools?

  2. How might we train custom GEMs using the Portrait of a Nevada Learner as our guide for meaningful educational AI?

  3. What authentic applications can we create when our AI partners truly understand our instructional and administrative realities?

What you'll take away:

  • Custom AI Partner: A trained GEM specifically designed for your instructional or administrative needs

  • Resource Library: A curated collection of potential GEMs and proven prompting strategies for educational contexts

  • Early Adopter Network: Connection to a community of innovative educators exploring the cutting edge of AI partnership in education

Who should attend:

K-12 educators and administrators who have experience with AI prompting frameworks (TAMER experience helpful but not required) and want to create specialized AI tools for their unique contexts.

What you'll need:

  • A device which can access the internet

  • Access to Google Gemini (with GEMs capability)

  • An Explorer's Mindset

  • Optional: Specific instructional or administrative challenges you'd like your custom GEM to address

Ready to polish the raw potential of AI into personalized gems that truly serve learning? Join us in creating AI partners that understand your world and amplify your expertise!
