Round Two! Yunnan Coffee Tasting & Archipelago Women Founders Talk EP02: “Chen Yuxin’s Choices“ |第二弹!
Following the enthusiastic response to our first session, Archipelago Café and Wonder Wander are bringing back our Yunnan coffee tasting this Sunday!
Once again in Paris, we’ll taste six distinctive Yunnan coffees and explore the flavors of one of China’s most exciting coffee origins.
Chen Yuxin’s life has taken several very clear turns.
After graduating from university, she gave up a more stable career path in finance and chose to join a startup. Ten years later, she stepped away from her original professional trajectory again. Starting from travel, land and agricultural products, she eventually chose coffee as the entry point for her own business.
As Yuxin herself has said, Wonder Wander did not begin because she was already a passionate coffee enthusiast. There was some coincidence involved, alongside a very rational assessment of repeat purchase, product potential and long-term value.
Courageous, with a constant desire to create something, yet also calm and rational enough to study the business before committing to it. That was our first impression of her.
Once she started building Wonder Wander Coffee, the story continued to unfold in ways that did not follow a standard “brand startup” path.
She decided to move her team from Beijing to Yunnan. Step by step, they began running their own cafés, roasting their own coffee, working with green beans, and even experimenting with growing coffee themselves.
Yuxin says that by repeatedly getting closer to the origin and closer to the product, she gradually came to understand what Wonder Wander Coffee, her team and she herself truly wanted to build.
Why start a business?
Why eventually decide to grow coffee herself?
Why move the team from Beijing to Yunnan?
As a brand grows, which decisions later prove to be the right ones?
Which mistakes come with real costs?
Today, we want to hear more stories of women founders and the choices they make.
Joey, founder of Archipelago, will join Yuxin in conversation about how she is redrawing her own coffee world map and finding Wonder Wander’s place within it.
Yuxin is also bringing six coffees with distinctive Yunnan flavor profiles all the way to Paris for a full tasting session.
At our first tasting, the audience voted Geisha “Spring Simmer Tea” as their No. 1 favorite, followed by Menghai Jujube at No. 2.
Come and find your own favorite.
Yunnan coffee and France actually share a connection that goes back more than a century.
From the late 19th to the early 20th century, as the Yunnan–Vietnam Railway was built and exchanges between Yunnan, French Indochina and Europe increased, coffee also began to make its way into Yunnan.
In Zhukula, a Yi village in Binchuan, Dali, French missionary Alfred Liétard lived and worked in the local community. Coffee was part of his daily life, so he brought coffee seedlings from Vietnam and planted them near the church.
Sources differ on the exact year, with both 1892 and 1904 frequently cited, but what is clear is that some of China’s earliest documented coffee trees took root here.
What may have started as one person continuing a familiar habit while living far from home gradually became part of local life. Villagers began growing, harvesting, roasting and drinking coffee themselves.
Over time, this foreign drink became a crop, then an industry, and eventually part of today’s specialty coffee culture.
More than a hundred years later, the story has come full circle. A Frenchman once brought coffee into Yunnan. Today, a new generation of Yunnan coffee brands is bringing its coffee back to France. Shaped by the land, climate, farmers and generations of coffee makers, it arrives in Paris as something distinctly and authentically Yunnan.
Come taste it with us!
