On The Origin of Skibidi: A Teach-In on the Internet-ification of Our Everyday Words
67, aura farming, looksmaxxing, rizz, brainrot, crash out, cooked, truth nuke, lowkirkenuinely—chances are, if you’re anywhere from 7 to 35 and on the Internet, you’ve said some of these words before. But where does this so-called “Gen Z” slang come from? What do the origins of these phrases—often a combination of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and incel slang—tell us about language, culture, and power online and offline?
Join us for a teach-in/workshop exploring the roots of words we love to use (and abuse?) as we unpack more than just etymology to make sense of the vocabulary defining our era of digital globalization, resurging fascism, and the sometimes absurdist, sometimes inscrutable humor we use to get through it all. Is it copium, hopium, or some kind of third secret thing?
This event takes place at the Williamsburg Library Auditorium, for $free.99! Enter the library, take the stairs down on your right, and come learn with us from 6-7:30pm on Tuesday, November 3rd 📚
