Slow Burn Social: A Vinyl Listening Experience of: "Asina Gúe" by Kombilesa Mi & more Global Sounds of Liberation
Slow Burn Social: A Vinyl Listening Experience was born out of a thread on social media that brought together a group of folks desiring to collectively listen. The initial call was for Jill Scott's latest album and now we are a beautiful community that is building intentional space to listen to sounds across the African diaspora and across genres.
This month's edition we highlight the global sounds of resistance and Black power in Palenque by highlighting "Asina Gúe" by Kombilesa Mi alongside global sounds of resistance of the past and present.
Palenque or San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia, is a potent land known as the first free slave town in the "Americas." Currently still existing as a self governing area and providing opportunities for education and exploration for visitors through their local tours. The language, music, food, and culture – still intact and forever resilient. We thank the resistance of the ancestors and present stewards of these lands for all that they are, providing an example for what long standing liberation can look like.
Kombilesa Mi is a dynamic group of artists from San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia fusing folk traditions with rap in the dialect of the palenque peoples. They speak of liberation, black culture, the power in our hair, skin, and lineages while playing traditional instruments. You may not know the language but you will feel the power in their groove and voices. Thank you to Algin for bringing me this record from Palenque and for being willing to collaborate on this month’s edition of slow burn social as we raise funds for this community.
This evening will be intentional and centered in listening, enjoying the community of vinyl and global resistance, folk, and Black liberation lovers and the richness that is US. Thank you for your trust, enthusiasm and energy — I look forward to bringing you all another edition of this event that leads to more experiences that we cherish as avid music lovers.
