Everything You've Heard About AI is Wrong
Abstract: Sci-fi author, computer scientist, and tech investor Ramez Naam shares a grounded, empirical, contrarian take on AI. Yes, AI is a remarkable tool., and perhaps humanity's greatest invention to date. No, there is no sign of either AI utopia or AI dystopia on the horizon. AI will cause substantial changes to human society, forcing us to increase our adaptability. But multiple limiting factors and core attributes of the technology remain likely to mute its impact. Rather than give in to eschatalogical views of AI - utopian or dystopian - the appropriate response is to find ways to leverage it to improve the world, and to boost society's resilience and adaptability in the face of this powerful new technology.
Bio: Ramez Naam is an American technologist and science fiction writer. He is best known as the author of the Nexus Trilogy. His other books include The Infinite Resource: The Power of Ideas on a Finite Planet and More than Human: Embracing the Promises of Biological Enhancement. He is currently co-chair for energy and the environment at Singularity University.
Earlier in his life, Naam was a computer scientist at Microsoft for 13 years and led teams working on Outlook, Internet Explorer, and Bing.
