Reading the Card: Let's Decipher the NMJL Card Together

​Want to get good at mahjong? Get good at the card.

​If you know the basics but still find yourself staring at the card, wondering what a line means or whether your tiles could work, this class is for you. We’ll slow things down and take a closer look at the details that are easy to miss during a game.

​Together, we’ll practice:

• ​Decoding colors, numbers, symbols, and parenthetical instructions

• ​Understanding suit requirements, matching numbers, and tile combinations

• ​Recognizing concealed hands and where jokers can, and can’t, be used

• ​Connecting the tiles on your rack to possible hands

• ​Spotting similarities between hands so you can recognize opportunities to pivot

​Through examples and hands-on exercises, you’ll build a clearer understanding of the card and feel more confident using it at the table.

​Designed for players who have completed beginner lessons or already understand the basics of American mahjong. Please bring your current NMJL card.
