About Event

We’re delighted to be hosting a special afternoon at Bull House, the Lewes home of Thomas Paine, on Sussex Day, 16th June.

It will be the second play-through of a version of Our House’s Charter Game (https://ourhouseuk.org/charter-building-game/), designed to help communities imagine how democracy could work better in the places they live. We have been developing a particular Sussex-focus for our version.

We will hear from Leanne O’Boyle, Founding Director of Thomas Paine: Legacy, about Paine’s role in transforming the politics and society of the time.

Then we will play the charter game, exploring what kinds of democratic instruments could transform how Sussex is governed, vital to explore with the changes on the horizon for the new local government set-up and the Sussex Mayoralty.

We will finish by exploring what we can learn from Paine’s use of simple, precise language in shaping a set of demands for how Sussex should be governed.

For those who wish to join, we will then retire to a local pub to continue the discussion.
