The Automated Labour Problem, AI Powered Authoritarianism, and Orwell's Nightmare | Trinity's Black Box Collective
This is the first meeting of a philosophy of tech and general stem discussion club/event hosting group, called Trinity's Black Box Collective.
The goal of this group is to educate and to teach others how to educate themselves. Specifically this group is trying to foster an environment where anything can be said and no judgments are made for stupidity or craziness, all to make intellectualism more accessible. Corporate networking is allowed but discouraged here as it creates a competitive environment and inhibits radical first principles thinking.
The meetings will go something like this:
First 15 mins: Chatting and settling down as everyone comes by.
0:15 to 1:15: A introduction and discussion of particular ideas and or literature, questions are permitted and a dialog should be expected.
1:15 to ~2:00: A further question period if needed, further chatting amongst everyone and we will eventually wrap up.
This first meetings discussion is hosted by me, a physics and computer science undergrad. The ideas presented attempt to explore how modern technology and economic trends are reshaping how societies function and how people’s personal information is used. It takes you through the growth of digital surveillance, how everyday data from online and offline behaviors are collected and used by companies and governments, and what this means for privacy and freedom. You will learn about new power dynamics where a few large technology firms and political actors have unprecedented influence over our lives, sometimes without clear oversight. I will also explain how automated systems and artificial intelligence are changing work and social life, creating challenges and risks and rapidly closing opportunities for shaping a fairer future. With this presentation, I hope to invite everyone to understand these changes and consider what we want our digital and real world to look like.
