Why You Think the Way You Do About Money: A live panel on the psychology behind every financial decision you've ever made

Here's a question nobody asks at a normal finance event:

  • Why does your best friend save obsessively while you can't walk past a sale, even though you make the same salary?

  • Why do you know exactly what you "should" do with your money and still not do it?

  • Why did you inherit your dad's spending anxiety instead of his frugality?

That's the whole point of this panel. Rebecca Pino (financial advisor) and Suzanne Kirkendall (behavioral scientist) are turning the mic on each other — and on you.

No slide decks, no "5 tips to save more" energy. Just two people who study money and behavior for a living, asking each other the questions they actually want answered, then opening the floor so the audience can grill them both together.

The format:

Suzanne asks Rebecca questions from the advisor's chair — what she actually sees when clients avoid their statements, self-sabotage a plan they wrote themselves, or panic-sell at exactly the wrong moment.

Rebecca asks Suzanne questions from the science side — what's actually happening in the brain when we do that, why financial habits get passed down like family recipes, and why "just be more disciplined" is close to useless advice.

Then it's your turn — bring your own weird money habit and put it on trial in front of two people whose entire careers are built on explaining it.

About Inertia
This panel is hosted in partnership with Inertia, the behavioral budgeting app Rebecca is building — the same place FABRIK Tribeca hosted the app's original launch.

Inertia isn't another spreadsheet that assumes you're a perfectly rational person; it's built around the idea that everyone has a different relationship with money, and the fastest path to a better one is understanding your own patterns instead of fighting them.

About Rebecca Pino
Rebecca is a licensed financial advisor, and behavioral money coach at Halliday Financial — the boutique wealth management firm her grandfather founded to serve educators. She's also the founder of Inertia and Money Her Way, and she's currently pursuing her EA credential.

Rebecca's approach to money comes from an unusual place: before she was an advisor, she was a personal shopper, which is where she first realized money decisions are rarely about the money.

About Suzanne Kirkendall
Suzanne is a behavioral scientist and the founder of Verelon, a consultancy that uses the science of human behavior to change how people make decisions, build habits, and get others to act.

She previously ran the North America business of BVA Nudge Consulting, holds an MPH from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health, and guest lectures at Columbia Business School and Penn. She also serves as president of Bescy, a global nonprofit for practitioners in the field. Suzanne is Inertia's behavioral science advisor and helped develop the archetypes at the core of the app.
