Introduction to Effective Altruism & Research Programs

No prior knowledge of EA required

Curious about effective altruism? Interested in research but not sure where to start? Join us for an introduction to EA and learn about two research programs open to everyone, regardless of your familiarity with the community.

What is Effective Altruism?

Effective altruism is about using evidence and careful reasoning to figure out how to do the most good. We'll introduce the core ideas and show you how they connect to research opportunities at Cambridge.

You don't need to know anything about EA to apply to these programs. We'll have free food during the event!

Programs Overview

CHIRP (Cambridge High Impact Research Project)
An 8-week intensive research program where you work on a concrete research question that could inform real-world decisions. You'll be paired with external mentors from leading organisations and supported by experienced research managers. Win up to £2,000 in prizes.

Project-Based Fellowship
A structured program to develop your research skills over the term. Choose a topic that interests you, work independently with guidance from research managers, and present your findings at our poster conference.

What You'll Get Out of It

  • Research skills - Learn how to scope questions, gather evidence, and communicate findings effectively

  • Professional connections - Get weekly mentorship from professors like SJ Beard, Author of Existential Hope.

  • Career exploration - Get invited to conferences where you can talk to organisations like the European Biosafety Association Conference, Animal Ask, and research institutes about career paths

  • 1:1 support - Regular meetings with group leaders who can answer questions and help you navigate opportunities

  • Network - Join a community working on concrete projects across multiple cause areas

These programs are designed as entry points. You'll learn what you need to know as you go.

Session Format

  • Overview of both programs - timeline, expectations, and support available

  • Context on effective altruism and the research landscape

  • Hear from past participants about their experience

  • Q&A to address your specific questions

  • Application workshop - get help finalising your application on the spot

Bring your laptop if you want application support.
