CDR Durability Performance in Net Zero Claims
Voluntary and compliance carbon markets will increasingly rely on carbon dioxide removal to play a role in achieving climate targets. However, CDR is an emerging industry and a lack of clarity on “what counts” is a barrier to carbon market growth. To build trust with buyers, unlock financing, and set up carbon markets for long-term success, clarity is needed on the performance required to make robust claims. Alignment exists on many aspects of CDR quality and performance, but CDR durability is a significant point of contention among stakeholders.
RMI is seeking to help resolve market frictions and accelerate CDR towards playing its needed role in climate change mitigation by proposing performance-based durability requirements for CDR in net zero claims. This workshop will offer a space to discuss open questions around defining performance requirements, with the goal of generating areas of alignment across the CDR ecosystem.
