Interactive Workshop: Mapping Power & Vulnerability for Effective Human Rights Due Diligence
HRDD frameworks, from the UNGPs and the OECD Guidelines to emerging mandatory due diligence legislation, expect businesses to identify their salient human rights risks and understand their root causes. Meeting that expectation means engaging with the concepts of power and vulnerability: where power concentrates and where vulnerability sits shape which risks exist, how they play out, and who bears them.
These dynamics run through every stage of the HRDD cycle - but are most relevant when it comes to understanding the risks that have been identified. A finding tells you what harm is happening. A root cause analysis enables you to work out why: tracing the direct causes of harm, but also the deeper, indirect conditions that make it possible. Analysis that reaches this level is what makes it possible to design interventions that deal with the conditions producing the harm.
Power and vulnerability mapping gives that analysis structure. It is a practical way of bringing these dynamics into view, in the workplace, across supply chain tiers and in buyer–supplier relationships, so that risk identification and root cause analysis reach further and interventions work better.
This is a practical, interactive workshop. Participants will work on a realistic supply chain scenario drawn from direct experience in supply chains across Asia-Pacific and East Africa, and learn to apply power and vulnerability mapping in their own risk identification and root cause analyses. They will leave with a structured, practical framework developed through applied advisory work.
